Import Media from SD Card

I was wondering if it's possible to use the SD card trick to import media to VLC. I have a 16GB iPad and want to bring more movies than my iPad can hold on my trip. My plan was to use the SD card reader and keep movies on an SD card and then import as I need. Can VLC read from the SD card?

As long as the SD card reader supports SMB you should be able to access the files directly via VLC.

The other way is to plug your SD Card Reader in to the USB NAS port of a Modem/router and take that with you.

Technically possible but may not be practical.
