VLC 2.7.2 (272.4) WiFi downloads not appearing in All files view

Postby ChrisGWarp » 28 Jan 2016 12:40

Hi.

Normally I download from Twonky 8.2 (from a QNAP nas) and it has worked really well.

However, recently the files that I chose to download directly from the nas over WiFi are not appearing in the All Files view, which is reporting as empty.

When I connected the iPad to iTunes I could see the files there, and I downloaded one to verify its integrity (md5sum) and it was ok.

Then I noticed that it was missing its extension. In this case when I renamed the file to include .mp4.

Then the files showed up in the All files view.

The new (I can honestly not remember if the last upgrade of Twonky caused this as I can not remember the timings, sorry) version of Twonky may not be sending the file name, or vlc is ignoring it.

Is there any possibility to provide a fix for this situation?

Thanks for such a great app!

-Chris

We are working on it. This is a known issue with version 2.7.2 and will be resolved in 2.7.3.

Just checked 2.7.4 and it still seems to be behaving the same way. Is there a new e.t.a. on a fix?

Thanks very much!

Ouch. Then, I need to re-investigate. I hoped that this was fixed.

Can you share the file type and codecs used by the original media you uploaded to your NAS? I guess it is something Twonky transcodes to deliver it to clients.

MP4 using x264.

I tried a couple of files from different sources.

BTW, I'm not sure what (272.4) refers to in the subject line nor am I using Twonky (???). I am trying to download via wifi from a couple of NAS' (synology & dlink). This used to work really well until one of the recent updates. I hope I'm in the right thread.

I do see the extensionless file from iTunes (in the file-sharing window) after the wifi download completes. And renaming the file to add .mp4 does fix the problem. But that defeats the purpose of the wifi download.

Hope this is helpful. (Apologies if I'm in the wrong thread. The behaviour is so similar, it seems related.)

Do an "About VLC for iOS" and you'll see the version, in my current case: 2.7.4 (274.3).

It is the exact same issue. I only came back to this thread to let the author know that 274.3 did not fix it. Which you had already done! Thanks!

Same here, standard x264 MP4, or MKV for that matter. I just tried an older XVID AVI and it too had the same issues (this is an old file, one not changed in years).

Yey! Thanks!
2.7.5 did not resolve the issue.
What is the usual ETA from submission to GA?

I just downloaded the latest version of the app (276.2) and the issue is still present. If the file downloaded has no extension it does not appear in the all files view.
File downloaded was in mkv format but I tested the same behaviour with mp4

Regrettably, the fix didn't make it in 2.7.7, but I just opened ticket 16928 so we don't forget about it again.

Fixed!
There was a setting to display the file name extension in Twonky (either new or reset to false as a part of the upgrade).
Once set to true (ie, show the extension), downloads worked again.
Just posting to let others know of a potential fix.

I do however, suggest that such a weakness (no extension) be fixed. Perhaps examine the file content to actually see/check the file content type?

VLC2.8.7 I have a similar problem with mp2 audio files downloading with wifi from a windows pc to ipad. Downloading 35 mp2 files, 11 downloaded correctly with origional filenames, 11 linked themselves together as one track but are still listed and can be played separatey but they have tag names instead of file names and they can not be separated. 13 did not appear atall. I tried the missing files again and they briefly appear and then dissapear.

Unfortunately I am new to ipad and find it very frustrating with no file manager to see what is happening. I gave up trying to get "My Music" to work, hence my attempts to get VLC to work which I use on my PC. I presume "My Music" is what you call "itunes", to check the files for the extensions. I loaded iFileExplorer but it does not show any of the files.

The ipad model MD366B/A iOS 9.3.5

Thank you for any help
