Subtitles over network share

Postby h121 » 06 Feb 2016 08:39

Hi,

First of all, thanks for your hard work for VLC! It's great :)

Anyway, I just noticed that VLC for iOS doesn't show SRT subtitles if I play the video from a network share. The subtitles work fine if I upload the video and SRT to the device. Summary:
  • The files are named "video.mp4" and "video.srt" and both exist in the same folder.
  • VLC for Mac displays the subtitles fine, regardless if I play the video from local harddisk or over SMB share.
  • VLC for iOS displays the same subtitles fine if I upload the video and SRT to the device over iTunes.
  • VLC for iOS does not show or play the subtitles if I play the video from a SMB share. The subtitle file seems not to be recognized at all, and the subtitle button is not visible in the UI. I can't see the SRT file in the file list when I browse the SMB share contents in the app.
Having to mess with iTunes to upload videos into the device instead of playing from my NAS is pretty annoying. Hopefully this gets fixed soon.

Seeing the same thing and I came to the forums to try and find information about this same issue. Here's hoping this is something that can be added/fixed!

I noticed the same problem. External subtitle files located on a network share do not seem to work. So I checked the code. The problem is easily fixable for non SMB shares (FTP, Plex, UPnP), so I submitted a patch that was accepted a few days ago. I hope it will make it into the next VLC release. However, fixing the problem with SMB shares seems more complicated. I found out what the problem is but I am not sure if I can fix it. I will look into this more as I also would like this to work.

Same problem on android..
Merge video and subtitle arquives with MKVToolNix program.
And this is no solution at all, the vlc team cannot expect from us to merge every single mkv file before we watch it, its just lame...

I had this problem with my galaxy tab s2. I found a solution. I was using a third party file manager. ES FILE EXPLORER. the file manager would launch a video using VLC. but this would not see subtitles over a network. My solution was simple. I did not launch the video with ES FILE EXPLORER, but with VLC itself. Using VLC app itself to launch the video the subitle menu was no longer greyed out.. and it saw and loaded the subtitle fine. IF you are using a third party ap to explore then run a vid with vlc thru that ap.. try loading vlc directly and finding the file to run over your network with VLC directly.. worked for me!

I found solution for this problem ,, first you have to open video file direct from vlc not from explorer ,, second name subtile file with the same name of video ,, third and this is the very important one and takes hours of me to understand it

Some translators use coloring and marks to change font style ,, vlc can't understand this things over smb and subtitle don't work ,, so you have to choose pure subtitle without colors or marks to change shapes
