Title updates for mp3 but not ogg?

Postby ctgreybeard » 08 Dec 2015 19:00

I have an icecast2 server with darkice streaming a radio scanner. The first one I set up used an mp3 stream but I upgraded to a Raspberry Pi 2 and when I rebuilt it I used ogg for the stream. On both systems I update the title through icecast http requests. When I listen to the stream on my laptop (OS X 10.11) the title updates as expected but on the iPhone it does not. When I was using mp3 the title updated on both the OS X and iPhone vlc installations.

Is this a bug or a missing feature? I am thinking of looking at the iPhone source to see if I can figure it out. Any hints on where to look?

Thanks for any comments.

Which version of VLC are you using on your Mac? Is this with VLC-iOS 2.6.6?

Both are up to date, Mac version is 2.2.1 and iOS is 2.6.6.

icecast2 is 2.4.0 and darkice is 1.2.

The scanner stream is available at http://www.greybeard.org/scanner

The title is updated automatically as the scanner picks up different channels and reverts when everything is idle. I use the standard icecast metadata update URL to change the title.

Looking at it a little closer using the icecast console it looks like the iOS VLC is picking up the SERVER NAME field and not the TITLE. On my icecast system the mountpoint shows server_name as "Fire/EMS Radio" and title as "Bethel/Danbury, CT Fire/EMS Scanner" which is the idle state title. For the OS X VLC the title is what is showing and that changes based on what the scanner is receiving.

More info ....

I connected with both the OS X and iOS VLC at the same time. The clients are shown as:

IP Sec. connected User Agent Action
192.168.2.17 7082 VLC/2.2.1 LibVLC/2.2.1 Kick
192.168.2.17 10 VLC/2.2.2 LibVLC/2.2.2 Kick

The IPs are the same because of the reverse proxy I am using but the 2.2.1 versions are OS X and 2.2.2 are iOS. I hope that doesn't mean the 2.2.2 is broken ...

Confirmed. I changed the feed from darkice to be mp3 and the titles now update in the iPhone. Looks like the problem is in the iOS player as the OS X player was updating for both formats.
