audio playback stop/start during screenlock

Hi, all:
I have been using VLC on an Ipod Touch to listen to audio books. Until several days ago, I could turn off the display and continue listening, then if I wanted to pause , I could turn the display on , and some controls for pause/start and volume were available above the screen lock. Now this is gone, I don't even beleive I updated the software (though it's hard to be sure with this apple stuff)

HOw can I re-activate this capability?

Did you try restarting your iPod touch?

Yes, that does not make a difference.
HOwever, one time in the last couple of days, the controls appeared , then other times they did not .
It is puzzling, but I'd just like to be able to pause without quite so many actions to do, like when someone needs to get my attention.

That's weird indeed. What iOS version are you using? Are the audio books automatically grouped by VLC as music albums or did you put them manually in a folder? Or is it just one big file you are playing from the main screen?
