VLC for iOS compatible w/ Lightning Digital AV Adapter

I currently have a iPad Air and iPhone 5 running with the latest versions of iOS and VLC and my question is:
Will VLC be compatible with a lightning digital adaptor? Compatible in the sense that, will it display the video from VLC correctly on my TV. The lightning digital adaptor uses hdmi. Before I go and buy this $60 adaptor will it work with VLC? I am sure that it works with iTunes but iTunes doesn't fun the .mkv format that I desperately need. I love your work and keep it up!

It's not tested, but 30-pin to HDMI adapter works well for me. Although it needs more improvements, i.e. continue playing(video rendering on external playback) when device is locked.
