VLC for iOS 2.1 and NAS (UPNP)

Postby Batlabate » 07 Sep 2013 10:55

I just download VLC 2.1 on my iPad and my iPhone. I have a NAS Synology (DS410) who is certificated DLNA. My WD TV Live and my video player see my NAS as an UPNP device. It seems everything work well. I can stream video on both.
But with VLC 2.1, my NAS is seen as an UPNP device but when I select it to enter ni the NAS and chose a video, VLC enter in the NAS but there is no directory and no file. As my NAS were empty

Somebody is hable to stream video from a NAS Synology with VLC 2.1 ?

Tank a lot for tour help.
And sorry for my poor Inglish.

And another one......
Synology DS411j (DSM 4.1) and DS413j (DSM 4.2)
It only showes the devices on the Local Network.
I can select them, but that's it.

Some good point : ftp function is nice !

I'll add to the pile here. VLC iOS 2.1 against a MediaTomb server on a Raspberry Pi. Shows up, but no file index at all.

Same here - the server shows up in VLC but selecting it goes to a blank page.

Server is an Ubuntu box running minidlna. It works correctly when accessed from the same iOS device using a different app (AcePlayer). It also works when accessing it from VLC 2.0.8 running on MacOS 10.8.4.

Thank you.

Quite possibly there are plenty who are but as they aren't having problems they aren't posting here?

Hello,

Thanks a lot for your numerous reports.

It is expected that some NAS devices don't work as they don't expose the stored files via HTTP which is required for now. However, I've also see failure reports for knowingly supported devices, which is a bit weird.

I'll try to get physical access to a NAS this week and will work on this, so we can published a fixed version as soon as possible. I'll update this thread with progress reports and hope to provide pre-release access to some of you if interested.

Cheers!

If you can't get a solid one, you can build a test rig with the Raspberry Pi (aka my setup). Check around if you can pick up a Model B, a power supply, and a 32 gig Class 10 SD card for it. It shouldn't cost more than $60 US, and I know you should be able to get it locally.

Raspberry Pi is at http://raspberrypi.org and has a list of distributors for the board there.
MediaTomb is on Raspbian and I used this to set it up: http://naich.net/wordpress/?p=641

I also experience that bug when using an Upnp server like "Universal Media Server" on my PC. This is not restricted to NASs..
/edit - on other PCs using the Windows Media Player Sharing the list doesn't load either
/edit 2 - one thing I noticed is when selecting the AVM Fritz!Mediaserver the VLC app gets stuck for several seconds

OK, UPnP file listing is fixed now (it was broken due to the OS runtime which overly optimized a memory block, so VLC never got the results) and a NAS will be delivered to my place tomorrow so I can add authentication support.

@gringoo: noticed the same for the Fritzbox but not for any other server. A bit weird, but I tend to blame the Fritzbox for it..

VLC on my Mac works fine w/uPNP and WDC Mybook Live. However on iOS when I open the listed twonky server it never shows the list of media. Can you confirm this has been fixed AND the app has been updated in the app store?

Cool ... I thought I was going crazy since none of the NAS devices or services (Iomega NAS, Windows Media Service, Serviio, etc) were showing any content or folders.

Version 2.1.1 of VLC for iOS is now "waiting for review". Let's hope they'll be fast. Seeing yesterday's press conference and that it's now possible to push updates targeting iOS 7, I fear that they won't though :-/
