VLC for andriod TV/phone, SUBTITLE issues.

On my network I have my video files and .SRT files in the same location. When played from the app on my phone or ANDROID TV (Nvidia Shield pro). The movie/show plays flawlessly. However, the srt file never loads or is even seen by VLC on either device. Both video and srt file are named the same. Is this just a bug or am I doing something wrong?

ON a side note if i copy/paste the SRT files directly to either device I can manually set the subtitles using VLC then. But i have to do this for every show/movie and I have 4 smart tvs and a house full of teenagers at any time that could be surfing something to watch on their devices. It would be impractical/impossible to download all the SRT files to every device.
