Can't find sort by date

Postby VLCplayer000 » 16 Sep 2024 10:13

I use VLC on Android pretty long enough, and I know there's a feature to sort files by modification time(or recently added). But since 2 week ago the feature just disappeared, and others sorting modes still works(by name, lenght, file's name). I endexed all my storage, I tried move folders and files in another folders, I reinstalled VLC, and all ways doesn't help. Please, give me advice why I can't find sorting by date.

This is the second report of this problem. In my Nightly of 2024-09-01 on Android 8:

* In the Audio section, it's still there. Tap the icon at upper right that looks like a screen with two arrows. The choices are to sort by release date, "Recently added", and "Insertion date". (What is the difference between "adding" and "inserting"?)
* In the Browse section, IF you select a folder with media files, sorting is under the three-dots logo at upper right, under "Display settings". But this menu is inexplicably different, and the only sort bases are (media) Name and File name.

By the way, in Browse, my Music folder still shows the incorrect number of subfolders, though all subfolders are shown if I click on it. And VLC repeatedly crashes with Can't access the Fragment View's LifecycleOwner for StorageBrowserFragment at Fragment.java:385.

Hi Spike1.
I don't understand what you want to say giving to me(or to the developers?) solution for nightly build, as an average user, I use actual stable version VLC from Google's playstore. I install the nightly build and then using your the instruction - easy have sorted my files by date!
But in the actual stable released build had different interface. The problem is grouping videos. Your sort options hides and appears - depend of which group mode you selected!! How a user can to know that? Most people will prefer group video by folder - because it's similar like grouping photos in a phone gallery, but then sort by recently added just dissappear. So just should to change group mode.
I respect VLC team, but I can't riddle why they disigned it like they did. Anyway, the problems is solved! Thank you.
About you problem with subfolders — Have you check in your subfolders some hidden folders? Or maybe some file formats have bugging media infomation...

Indeed, some of my comments, such as the crash report, are not for you but for Developers. I recommend the Nightly because the published edition is months old and many bugs have been fixed. (Though a few new ones have been added?)

It would be simpler if the sorting interface were identical in all cases and all sections, regardless of whether anything is currently displayed that could be sorted.

An alternative I have used since the days of Winamp is to change the filenames to have prefixes such as "(01)" so they are naturally sorted in the order I prefer.

Without sorting by descending date in Browse makes VLC almost unusable by me, sorry to say.
Using a very limited media player prevents me from loading the “nightly” etc…
I used VLC from a directory App on a Windows 10 desktop before and it is the first time I’ve tried to use it from an Android media player. RKMC doesn’t work on this new media player any more so I tried VLC…

Louwin, I'm confused. VLC _is_ the media player. You would ordinarily get a new nightly version of VLC not from VLC but from your browser. This is an APK file; view it in /Downloads with an Android file explorer; tap it to install it over your existing VLC version. Recent VLC versions can ping Videolan and see if there is a newer VLC version and ask if you want to upload it. Apologies if I'm telling you things you already know. Now, you _can_ sort by descending date in Browse! Only not in Video and Audio.
