[Bug] Sorting by name places new audio files in separate "#" category

Postby Elo_the_E » 26 Aug 2024 22:47

This bug has been going on for a while now with me and I'm not sure what might be the cause.

Basically, whenever a new audio file is downloaded or transferred to my storage and the app searches for it, the files will be all clumped up together into this "#" category at the end of all the other categories (#-Z) instead of being actually sent to the proper alphabet letter.

A few of the things I tried to do were re-downloading the audio files, cleaning the cache of the app, changing the folder were the files were kept, renaming files, cleaning the playing history and finally, reinstalling the app fresh off the Google play store, none of which actually did anything. I'm quite new in forum stuff so I'm not sure how I can post screenshots of the issue, but I do have those to show if needed.

Thanks in advance, hope the issue gets solved ASAP.

The usual way to share media and crash dumps is by using a cloud-based service such as pastebin and put the link to the file in a post here.

The "#" category comprises media files that begin with a number. Could you verify that the transfer method doesn't automatically rename the file? I notice that Android 14 appends a transfer time to each file, which I then have to remove; but even that wouldn't change the alphabetization. At any rate, you say you've renamed files but the bug remains.

Please identify your device model, Android version, and VLC version (at ...More > About). And does this bug occur in the Audio section or in the Browse section?

There is a setting, under ...More > Settings > Interface > Show headers, normally enabled, that is responsible for the "#" heading. Unchecking this disables the headings, but if new files are sorted incorrectly, it might not correct that.

Thanks for the explanation on how to show the images. I think I figured a way by sending images to discord and using the links from that. A little quality loss but it's not too bad.

The source of these audio files is mostly SnapTube, and whenever I have to transfer things around I use FS Explorer, and those two don't really rename any files whenever transferring things.

As for the device and details, this is a Motorola moto g52 with android 13 and the VLC app is up to date (ver 3.5.4)
And as the screenshots show, its in the Audio section.

Spot on, messing with that didn't do anything. It does technically solve the issue by way of not really having headers to begin with ig

Images attached bellow. These are in Portuguese but it should be all in the same spots as in English.

As you can see this "#" header isn't working. It is also not the same as the one meant for numbers but in the process of deleting and re downloading files I ended up eradicating the presence of those outside the bugged category.

Sorting by file name doesn't have the issue.

Any other possible ideas?

It seems that the files in the first image have acquired an invisible leading character that makes VLC put them in the non-alphabetic part of the list. I assume the issue is not solved as it will recur if you download more music.

Version 3.5.4 is not the latest; there is a 3.6.0 Beta 2. Perhaps Developers have fixed this bug. Pick it up here or in a sibling directory for your architecture:
https://artifacts.videolan.org/vlc-andr ... tly-armv7/

Otherwise, let's wait for a Developer to arrive and help you diagnose further.

As Spike said, it's probably a weird char at the start of your tracks. Unfortunately, your screenshots are not available.
