If you're using the nightly versions, first, thank you! You are more and more using them and providing early feedback that help us a lot!

Starting with the nightly version published on the 7 July 2024, you will now receive in-app notification if a newer update is available and will be able to update it easily.

We hope that it will ease the way you use the nightly versions/

Won't there be a newer nightly every night? Will you let us opt out? I don't want apps that initiate internet transfers or try to influence my behavior after acquiring them.

Starting with the nightly version
Does this mean that such updates will soon appear for the stable version?

I got pestered even though my Nightly is 2024-07-01. But I see that the pop-up does include "Never Ask Again?" so I am opted-out and will sample again on 2024-08-01. Still a bad idea.

Yes, when the build doesn't fail
Will you let us opt out?
Of course. The never ask again is meant for that. In the advanced settings, you can then force it manually.
TBH, I don't get your point/frustration with that. It will be so much easier to update, especially on TV devices without a browser.

Does this mean that such updates will soon appear for the stable version?
Maybe. If so, only for versions that are downloaded from outside a store.

I don't want apps initiating web operations except on command (I pay per megabyte). There have been posts from users blaming VLC for high internet traffic and Developers have responded proudly that it never does so except to fulfill a user command. This new "feature" is at odds with that claim. And, again, I don't want "tools" that try to influence my decisions post-acquisition. Ease of update (though updating isn't difficult) is your value. Remaining in control of my tools is my value.

Now I get it, and you are right. I'll find a solution to make it an opt-in feature.

It's not difficult for you. But in some cases (Android TV for example where there is no browser) it's not.
Remaining in control of my tools is my value.
For now, "Never ask again" should work for you. We'll add the opt-in feature ASAP.
