To Grant Permission

Postby letsdothis » 17 Jan 2024 03:09

What possible reason on ALL of God's great big green Earth would cause me to grant you this kind of access to my devices?

"VLC
3.5.4
Allow access to manage all files.

Allow this app to read, modify and
delete all files on this device or any
connected storage volumes. If granted,
app may access files without your
explicit knowledge
."

That would be me telling you to go ahead and delete any file you want, or better still, just delete them all, I don't need them anymore. Oh, and while you're at it, go ahead and delete my OS, too. I won't need it after you delete all my other files. And don't bother to ask me for permission to do that, or even let me know you're doing it. Just help yourself to anything you want.

I've used VLC for probably close to 20 years, and loved it, but I've never been asked for any kind of access even remotely similar to that.

Please explain why I would give you that type of access to my devices.

In recent versions of Android there are 3 file permission levels:
- None given: the app has access to no file
- Standard: the app has access to all files considered as media by Android (so some playable files won't be shown)
- All: the app has access to all files

All of this is explained in the onboarding screen:

VLC needs read access to your entire file systems in order to play desired music and videos. It needs write access to provide functions such as Delete File.

With those permissions, VLC could do all those scary things, if VLC were malware. But VLC is open-source (you can look at the code) and its presence on the Play Store should provide more assurance that it is not malware.

As Aza writes: The reason you have not been asked to grant VLC these permissions before is that Android has changed "for your protection."

This is an Android feature and message. Access to files means read and write. Because Android works like that.
VLC, like any other app, must obey the Android framework rules.

Hi Aza,

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. My apologies for not replying sooner. There are good reasons for that, but you don't want to know about my life situation, so I'll skip that.

I'm very new to this forum system, and before I get into your post, I have two questions. How do I reply directly to someone's post without using the Post Reply button, which just gives me an empty post box, or quoting your entire post?

Is it possible to Include a screenshot with a post? I tried the Img button, but it just gave me BBCode, and since my screenshot is on my device, I wasn't sure how, or if, that would work with the BBCode.

When I quoted your post, I noticed you put a URL in the BBCode. Is that the only way to include a screenshot, by putting the entire page in the BBCode?

The text I included before, I extracted from the screenshot I wanted to include in my first post.

About your post. The onboarding screen you posted I've never seen before. I wish I had, It would have made life much easier, and eliminated the need for this topic. I will use your method and try to send you the pages I see when I open VLC.

It was in the text of the screenshot I first posted, but I'm running version 3.5.4. I read that is the latest version for Android.

Update: i can't use the BBCode with the URL method you used because there is no URL for the page. It's a screen from VLC. So, back to my question, how do I include a screenshot in my post.?

Thanks again for your help. A thought, might it help to reinstall VLC?

Just use the post reply button. Don't bother quoting if you don't want to. If you want to quote a part of somebody's else message (like what I did above), you can select that part at the bottom of the reply in the message and click the quote button (").

Yes, you can use Imgur or any other service to host your image and include your image using BBCode.

The BBCode used for images looks like that :

Code: Select all

It is only shown once, the first time you launch the app.
