VLC for android does not show media files

Postby acastro50 » 02 Nov 2023 22:47

I have about 2400 videos in my cell phone, in the DCIM/Camera and the WhatsApp folders. VLC can only show abut 800 of these in the media player, the older ones. I find all them correctly listed in the VLC file manager, but this one does not offer some of the advantages the media viewer does. Is there a limit to the number of files the VLC media viewer can index?

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, and deleting all data and cache, with no success. Any ideas?

What are the file types of the files VLC does not display?

PS - The Browse section will show all media files. The Audio and Video sections are limited by where you told VLC to look. See the first two entries in More > Settings. The first lets you select individual folders to search; checking the second instructs VLC to look everywhere in local storage every time it starts up.

I only direct VLC to index the folders I need: Android's DCIM/Camera, WhatsApp and a Video backup of an old micro SD card, which also includes the folders DCIM/Camera and WhatsApp. The VLC viewer stops exactly after reading the complete micro SD card, and shows this in the media viewer. I can tell from the date of the last recent file of the micro SD card in the video manager.

All files are mp4.

The VLC file manager works properly and finds every file in the cell phone, but it is not as frendly as the Media manager. For example, it will not add a check mark after finishing one video. This is very handy when reviewing tens of videos. I must note that almost all videos are about 25-30 MB.

Also, VLC will index the micro SD card backup, whether I include or exclude it in the list of folders to index.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Problem solved. There is a limit in how many files the VLC media viewer for android can handle. It cannot index more that about 850 video files (maybe 1000 but I did not test that). All the files are about 20 MB in size each, but I do not believe this is an issue. The solution: I split the 2400 files into 850 in the DCIM Camera folder and the rest in a separate folder. Now the media viewer can show correctly the 850 files. The VLC browser (file manger) could handle the full 2400 files but it is not as friendly as the media viewer.

It's possible that VLC might be facing challenges in indexing such a large number of files. To address this issue, you can try a few troubleshooting steps:

Clear VLC Cache: In addition to clearing data and cache, try clearing VLC's cache specifically. Go to your device settings, find the VLC app, and clear its cache.

Check VLC Settings: Look into VLC settings, especially those related to media library indexing. There might be an option to increase the limit or manage how many files it indexes.

Update VLC: Make sure you have the latest version of VLC installed. Developers often release updates to address bugs and improve performance.

File Format Compatibility: Ensure that the file formats of the videos are supported by VLC. While VLC is versatile, some unusual formats may not be fully supported.

Use Another Media Player: As a temporary solution, you could try using an alternative media player that might handle a large number of files better.

Organize Files: Consider organizing your videos into subfolders within the DCIM/Camera and WhatsApp folders. Sometimes, having a large number of files in a single directory can cause performance issues.

Contact VLC Support: If the issue persists, reaching out to VLC support or checking their forums might provide insights or solutions specific to their app.

Remember to back up your important data before making significant changes to avoid any potential data loss. I hope one of these suggestions helps resolve the issue! 🎬🤞
