When I steam either M3U or AAC at 128k from BaGEL Radio, it always cuts off around 2½ minutes after I start. I can't pause start to restart it. It happens with or without my VPN on, FWIW, I buffer about 20 to 30 seconds on the player to compensate for latency.

I'm running v.3.5.4

Could you please share some logs? Reproduce the issue and then go to: Settings > Advanced > Debug logs. Then share the logs with the sharing service you prefer (Google Drive, Dropbox, pastebin...).

With the VPN off, there was no problem. I shut the app off after 10:20ish

There is unfortunately nothing useful in the logs. Can you try start logging before starting the playback?
