VLC for Fire TV: Stream over HTTP[S] from directory

Hello!

Let's assume there is a directory containing several media files that can be accessed at https://www.example.com/my-directory/. "Directory Listing" is activated for the directory so that when the URL is called up via the browser, a listing of the media files is displayed.

How can such a directory be called in VLC for Fire TV via HTTP[S] in order to be able to select the media files from the directory? I don't want to have to add (with the remote control) the complete path (e.g.: https://www.example.com/my-directory/my-media-file.mkv) for every single file as a stream. After all, I can also navigate in local directories (LAN).

Best regards and have a nice weekend!

Eckhard

You can use X-plore file mgr to add a ftp server entry to the directory url. Long click on the media file and choose Open with VLC. Would not using the http protocol open the media file with the browser's player?

Thanks, but I can't use FTP without having user name and password for the FTP server, right?

If you add https://www.example.com/my-directory/my-media-file.mkv as a stream in VLC for Fire TV it will instantly play the media file.

Yes you do need to enter credentials. Thought you were the owner of the site.

Whats wrong with using the browser's media player?

Basically nothing, but Fire TV does not come with a good browser, and I'd like to use VLC. Besides that, the browser doesn't support the mkv file format.

Am using mp4 container and was not aware that mkv is not natively supported by browsers. Any browser (sideload to the firestick) with a vlc addon?? Now understand your original question. Can anyone else assist!
