VLC 3.5.3 unchecks media library folders after each restart on Nvidia Shield 9.1.1

VLC 3.5.3 unchecks media library folders after each restart

On Nvidia Shield 9.1.1

Every time I restart the app, it unchecks all the folders in the media library and I have to re-select them. I’m using an external drive. When I re-select the folders, videos show up again in the library.

However, music in the library won’t play and I get an error, unable to open MRL. Or storage is unavailable.

I went to the VLC app permissions and made sure permission for files is enabled. (It’s weird that it is always set as “don’t allow” after a fresh VLC install despite that I give permission when I first start the app). Anyway, I make sure I enable it, and still doesn’t fix the issue.

Tried reinstalling VLC multiple times, restarted the Shield, moved the external drive to a different USB, to no avail.

How can I fix that?
It was working ok a few days ago, but I started using another drive which works fine in all other apps.

Thanks

I had this problem; checked directories became unchecked if I merely scrolled them off the screen. There is a work-around.

Thanks, but I can’t find that work-around.

Btw, mine is not just unchecking folders if I just scroll them off the screen. It’s more consistent forgetting of directories even after a restart. Also that MRL error.

I’ll try an older version of VLC, I know the latest version added a fix for Android 12 permissions, but the Shield still has Android 11. May be it’s not compatible?

Well, I’m glad to find out that the previous version fixes these issues. I downloaded version 3.5.2 and it keeps the selections of the library after the app restarts, and no MRL error any more. So this is likely a bug with 3.5.3 on Nvidia Shield.

I downloaded the arm64 version (first one on the list) from here:
https://get.videolan.org/vlc-android/3.5.2/

The only downside now is that I’ll have to disable auto-update of apps and update apps manually from now on until VLC is fixed.

Thank you

I am not able to reproduce this issue at all on a Shield running Android 11. Could you please tell me if you unplug/plug your drive?
Also a media database dump could be useful. To do so, go to: Settings > Advanced > Dump media database.
To retrieve the file on Android TV, you should follow this: https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.ph ... ck#p509973
Then share the file here (in private if you want) with the sharing service you prefer (Google Drive, Dropbox, pastebin...).
