"pixel crop" metadata support

Postby tommik » 29 Oct 2022 17:36

Hi,

I have a common scenario here: a blu-ray rip from MakeMKV, obviously video is hard encoded into 1920x1080 frame, active picture being only 1920x816 since the movie is in fact in 2.35 aspect ratio, the rest of the video frame is black bars (132 pixels both on top and bottom).

I am playing this MKV on my new Zenfone 9 which has a 20:9 screen and since it is not a 16:9 screen the top and bottom black bars hit the edges first resulting in a framed video playback. Cycling through all the "aspect ratio" options (bottom right) does not give any result I would like to see. Even the "fit screen" option actually cuts off left and right sides of active picture!

What I would like to see: there is an option to add cropping metadata into MKV video track that should tell a player to omit those pixels. So if the player could crop the movie frame according to those and then do the "best fit" on the actual screen. (like: pixel width = 1920, pixel height = 1080, pixel crop bottom = 132, pixel crop top = 132 => display 1920x816 trying to "zoom" best fit (whatever side hits the edge of the screen first).

Thanks for comments.
