Strange HDR playback issue in Android TV

Postby nmlss » 25 Jun 2022 20:58

Hello everyone!

I am posting this because i am facing a very strange playback issue in my Android TV. This is how i see the video.

The video is a 4k HDR HEVC movie, the weird thing is that it's not the first of its kind in my library.

My VLC for Android TV is version 3.4.4 rev fbedb3742 VLC:8581f07c2 (2022-02-14)

The movie works just fine in my PC and phone (which has the same VLC version and rev)

Edit: i compared codecs of both this and the movie i play fine, the differ in R,G,B, MaxCLL and MaxFALL values, i hope this can help.

Edit2: The movie has the following HDR values - MaxCLL 5334 cd/m2 and MaxFALL 96 cd/m2 but i can't name which HDR is since i can't find a value table using Google.
Sure it's brand new, the movie is still in cinemas.
Could be this HDR is not supported by my current Android TV version?

Any solution? Thanks in advance for any explanation given! :)

Hello,

Thanks for the bug report. In case of HDR not supported, you generally can see the whole video but with wrong colors (but not like your screenshot).

Could you tell me what is your android device, TV device, and could you upload your video here : https://streams.videolan.org/upload/

You can put all these informations in a new issue here: https://code.videolan.org/videolan/vlc/-/issues (or I will take care of that if you post them here)

Hello tguillem, thanks for the reply!

I am not confident enough to compile a detailed bug report since i never did one, so i prefer to drop info here, i hope that's ok.
It looks like in order to upload a video you first have to compile the bug report, so i uploaded a trim version in my dropbox. I left the file name intact - in case you need to check out the whole video. you will know what to check for.

As for the TV, the android device is tpm191e while the TV model is 55pus7504/12

Are these enough informations for you or you need a detailed TV specs report?

Your sample file is a recording made by VLC. We DO need a sample of an original problematic file, no reencoding, no new container.

If your are also using Windows then do a binary cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:
https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.ph ... 35#p193335
200 MB max should be enough.

Sorry, i checked the recording i did and it shows the same playback issue, i thought was good.
Here it is anyway, 200MB chunk of the original file: https://www.dropbox.com/s/v1t2tfay9iyoj ... 0.mkv?dl=0
