subtitles on VLC for Fire

First, not sure if this is the correct section to post about VLC for the Amazon Fire devices. I have the relatively new (a few moths ago) Fire 4k sticks. I don't see a specific subforum for Fire and I read that it is basically Android. If this is the wrong section, please advise or move this thread.

My issue has to do with subtitles. I have not been able to get VLC Fire app to display subtitles. I have some movies and shows with explicit subtitle files (*.srt) and have not been able to get VLC for Fire to display them. I have gone into other/settings and see that "Load subtitles Auto" is checked. I have not been able to find any other subtitles controls from the Fire remote or in the app menus.

Shows viewed with the Prime app can display subtitles, but not downloads viewed with VLC.

Any guidance?

maybe a related question: How can I bring up the onscreen navigation bar in the Fire version? I read that the Android version has an onscreen Nav bar and this bar has an icon that accesses subtitle features. I don't see any Nav bar as I play videos. Can't find any way to bring it up. Pause brings up a Nac bar in the regular Prime app but not if VLC for Fire

well I figured it out. The on screen buttons had to be enabled in the settings and pushing the center button brings them up. I was able to download subtitle files but the subtitle file finder does not see my NAS wehere the video files are. I noticed that some subtitle files don't synch up and other do. Would be nice if the subtitle browser could see my NAS like the video browser/network can.
