It seems to be random, from 20-120 seconds.
Occurs if phone moving, or stationary.
Occurs in bright light, dark room, or pocket.
Occurs with all video and audio files.
Occurs always.
Occurs whether VLC is minimized but screen active, or if minimized and screen locked, or if not minimized and screen locked.
Occurs with files on device and over SMB/WiFi/WLAN.
Occurs despite screen timeout set to 10 minutes, so nothing should be sleeping in less than 2 minutes.
Within VLC:
Yes, I have enabled background playback. I am wondering if the phone is overriding that, or not respecting the permission setting anymore, or if VLC is not properly telling the phone.
In Android:
Android 11 / Samsung One UI 3
Change System Settings - Both Diabled, and Enabled, same result.
Use cases:
Listening to music, with phone out of hands.
Playing a video file where I am only interested in the audio.
Listening to audio while editing source code or surfing the web on phone.
Temporarily (~5 minutes) ignoring video to look something up on the web, while listening to audio.
Untested:
Not sure if VLC keeps playing if put into PIP mode. I don't use PIP mode for this use case.
