Android subtitles

I'm in the process of ripping all my DVDs and Blu-rays. The process I'm using does not create separate subtitle files but somehow includes the subtitles in the MP4 file. When I view these MP4 files on my computer using VLC for Windows, I can easily toggle subtitles on and off. When I view (stream) these same MP4 files from my Android device using VLC for Android, however, I do not have the option to toggle subtitles on or off. The subtitle button is disabled. Can someone please explain to me why subtitles work differently on the Android vs Windows version of VLC and what I need to do to enable subtitles on my Android version of VLC?
Thanks!

Hi, you seem to be blending the subtitles directly on the video. Because it's written directly in the picture, it cannot be removed.

I don't want to remove the subtitles, I just want to be able to use them (i.e. turn them on and off, as desired).

If you encoded the subtitles on the video, it cannot be turned off, it's in the image.

I don't want to remove the subtitles.
I don't (necessarily) want to disable the subtitles.
I want to enable (use) the subtitles but I'm unable to do so since the option to enable subtitles is not selectable. Once enabled, however, I'd then like to be able to disable them.
If there's somebody that can read my initial question, understand it and then answer it, I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks.
