VLC 3.2.x & 3.3.x dev issues
Posted: 20 Nov 2019 14:45
by Lotesdelere
I have installed and tested VLC 3.2.1 and 3.2.2 on Oreo and I've noticed several issues:
1. MIDI files with a .MID extension appear in the Video tab (I've already reported that many times)
2. When I open an audio file from Samsung MyFiles -> Open with , I'm getting random numbers in the History tab and not the filename:
3. VLC claims 24 bits 96 kHz FLAC files have 4 channels while they are stereo:
Other players are doing it right:
4. Strange behaviour with the embedded covers of audio files:
Example #1:
Jean-Michel Jarre has a strange icon when browsing from Directories:
However it does show the cover in the Audio -> Artists list:
Example #2:
Now the opposite, Yes and ZZ Top have no cover in the Artists list:
But they do show when browsing from Directories:
FYI, same behaviour on KitKat with the same music folder.

Hi,
1: Could you sent the midi file in question?
2: Could you find out the filename associated with the media?
3: Could you send the file?
5: Hard to say without logs/db...
Ideally, if you could open one ticket per issue on https://code.videolan.org/videolan/medialibrary, with the associated files/info that would help a lot!
Thanks,

2: Any file, audio or video, any extension.
1, 3 & 4 (no 5 yet
): I'll upload my whole folder compressed directly on the phone so you can check anything yourselves.
And I'm not going to post reports anymore on https://code.videolan.org/videolan/vlc-android because I don't want to use Google neither my mobile phone for two-factor authentication.
I'm quite sure I'm not the only one in this case, so please find another way for 2FA

2: Yeah but I suspect the issue is dependent on the file name, which is why I asked for the file name of a media that exhibit the issue
A full upload is fine by me, thanks
I'm using a yubikey for 2FA, which seems to work for your requirements, and I suppose any OTP application should work

Side note, I think you stole my music library. Right on!

I'll throw in my 2 cents as well. Running 3.2.2 on Pie.
When grouping videos they will now automatically switch to list mode rather than staying on grid mode if selected. There is no option to show as grid when they are grouped, it is automatically switched to list.
If you ungroup videos they can show in both grid and list by selecting which mode you want from the 3 dots menu. As soon as you group them however the list mode is default and the "show in grid" option is no longer displayed in the 3 dots menu.

It's still the same to me with v3.2.6 even after deleting app cache and data...

3.2.6 still has the subtitle issues that have been completely ignored.

It's still the same to me with v3.2.6 even after deleting app cache and data...
Same goes with v3.2.9, tested on KitKat, Nougat, Oreo and Q.
No changes, no improvements
How come you couldn't even, at least, fix the annoying MIDI file appearing in the Videos tab ?
I gave you my whole music folder and my database more than three months ago...

And I still have the MIDI file appearing in the Videos with v3.3.0 RC2...
Seriously, how come this has not been fixed yet ? I gave you my whole music folder and my database EIGHT months ago.
And no other player is doing that.

In fact, it's not that trivial.
We created an issue to track that here:

Another issue with 3.3.0 RC2:
ZZ Top shows the cover of The Red Hot Chili Peppers et when I click on Play it plays Earth Wind & Fire
I don't attach the pic to this thread because it's way too large:
https://i.postimg.cc/3r5khYxh/Screensho ... C.png?dl=1
Because all of these tracks share the same album name: Greatest Hits.
There have been issues with this for a loooong time.
Let's make it clear: no other player is doing that. Even my quite old Galaxy Y running a 6-7 years old stock ROM, and using Google Music which is as old as the ROM, is showing the correct covers for all of the tracks sharing the same album name.
And BTW, notice how the cover is blurry. They are all like that in this list. But the display of the cover is fine when the player is "full screen" when you swipe the controls up.

In next beta (RC4), the midi files won't be displayed in the video list anymore but in the audio list. However, they won't play (for now).

I've just installed VLC-Android-3.3.0-RC-4-armv8-20200814-0142.apk.
The MIDI file finally appears in Audio.
However ZZ Top has vanished from the Artists list, it now appears in Various Artists although the file is correctly tagged!
Code: Select all
Format : MPEG-4
Format profile : Base Media
Codec ID : isom (isom/iso2/mp41)
Album : Greatest Hits
Track name : Viva Las Vegas
Track name/Position : 8
Track name/Total : 18
Performer : ZZ Top
Genre : Rock
Recorded date : 1992
Cover : Yes
Again, because of the shared album name: Greatest Hits.
This priority given to the album name is fondamentaly wrong and I do believe this is the source of various issues.
EDIT:
I had to tick Show all artists for ZZ Top to appear in the Artists list.
But now, I have in this Artists list an item named "The Red Hot Chili Peppers", without a cover, coming out of the blue since nowhere in the tags neither in the file name there is "The" but only "Red Hot Chili Peppers".
Code: Select all
General
Complete name : F:\MP3\Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication.wma
Format : Windows Media
File size : 3.88 MiB
Duration : 5 min 29 s
Overall bit rate mode : Constant
Overall bit rate : 98.7 kb/s
Maximum Overall bit rate : 96.6 kb/s
Album : Greatest Hits
Track name : Californication
Track name/Position : 3
Performer : Red Hot Chili Peppers
Genre : Rock
Recorded date : 2003
Encoded date : UTC 2004-01-15 18:04:24.953
Cover : Y
Audio
ID : 1
Format : WMA
Format version : Version 2
Codec ID : 161
Codec ID/Info : Windows Media Audio
Description of the codec : Windows Media Audio 9 - 96 kbps, 44 kHz, stereo 1-pass CBR
Duration : 5 min 29 s
Bit rate mode : Constant
Bit rate : 96.0 kb/s
Channel(s) : 2 channels
Sampling rate : 44.1 kHz
Bit depth : 16 bits
Stream size : 3.77 MiB (97%)
Language : English (Great Britain)
Duration_Source : General_Duration
Pic of wrong item:
https://i.postimg.cc/tyzFP1Qf/Screensho ... C.png?dl=1
Correct one:
https://i.postimg.cc/6wKdyrSn/Screensho ... t.png?dl=1
And now, Earth Wind & Fire has the cover of Red Hot Chili Peppers!
https://i.postimg.cc/JM6J69h5/Screensho ... C.png?dl=1
But notice how the cover is blurry. Title and artist are unreadable while it's displaying fine in other players.
IMO the thumbnail is being used in this view and not the real cover, for some reason.

I've just installed VLC-Android-3.3.0-RC-4-armv8-20200814-0142.apk.
The MIDI file finally appears in Audio.
For the record, that works with VLC-Android-3.3.0-RC-4-armv8-20200814-0142.apk but not with the 'official' RC4 3.2.92, with this one the MIDI file still appears in Videos.
3.2.92 installed over RC2, cache cleared but not app data.

Yes, a clear data / whole rescan is mandatory for the existing media to be sorted in audios.
We made that decision to avoid forcing people to rescan (another time).

Ok, deleting app data finally fixed the MIDI file issue.
But the Red Hot Chili Peppers cover/playback mayhem described above is still there.
There are other minor UI issues but I'll talk about them later, the problem with files sharing the same album name is much more critical, IMO.

About the cover/playback mayhem, let's do it step by step.
Something very simple to begin with:
I open Audio -> Artists list,
I tap on ZZ Top, it opens a new screen with a big Play button,
I tap on this Play button and it's playing Earth Wind & Fire.
Not ZZ Top.
This is wrong.
You can easily reproduce this since you, the devs, have my music folder (ask Chouquette or J-B) which is located at the root of my external SD card, if it could matter.

Three months later it's still the same with v3.3.2 beta 4

Did you try the 3.3.3 beta? Some changes have been made for that in this version.

It's not yet available on the FTP as I'm typing this.
I hope it also fixes this regression:
