Possible to browse a server over internet? (without VPN)

I have a Windows server with a shared folder. I can browse it fine on LAN. But what about when I'm not on LAN? Is there a way I can make this folder available remotely? Will it work if I use VPN?
Or are there other ways I can achieve this? (if I install other server software). FTP?

Hi, it will work through VPN and it's certainly the more secure you would have. Otherwise, yes, you need an authentication-capable server that you expose. You may need to redirect ports if you're not using IPv6.

I would prefer not to use VPN (annoying to remember to connect VPN everytime). Port forwarding is no problem, neither is security.
What kind of server software/protocol can I use? I can't see any way to add a remote server of any type in VLC for android?
