VLC for Android 3.1.x is out

VideoLAN is happy to present the new major version of VLC for Android platforms, called 3.1.x.

It is currently at version 3.1.1, on the Play Store.

It features AV1 decoding with dav1d, Android Auto, Launcher Shortcuts, Oreo/Pie integration, Video Groups, SMBv2, and OTG drive support. But it also improves on Chromecasting, Chromebooks integration, audio/video libraries management and many other things.

See https://geoffreymetais.github.io/features/vlc-31/ for more details.

Please report in this thread REGRESSIONS (things that were working in VLC 3.0.x and are broken in 3.1.x). Keep new threads for normal issues, features and other discussions.

While coming back to VLC from a screen lock state, a totally blank (black) screen is displayed. Bottom navigation icons are displayed and can be used to exit VLC. No media control buttons of VLC are displayed even after repeated tapping of screen.

Rapid switching between apps without locking the screen do not seem to have this problem. However if VLC is sent to the background after a random prolonged interval the same behavior is observed even without screen lock.

VLC 3.1.1
Android 9.0
Sony Xperia XZ1 firmware 47.2.A.10.28

When I save a playlist and attempt to overwrite a preexisting playlist, the songs in the playlist I am trying to save just get added to the playlist I am attempting to overwrite. I first noticed this when I updated a playlist and tried to overwrite a previous version, which resulted in the playlist becoming full of adjacent duplicate songs.
This may actually be the intended functionality for all I know. However, in previous versions of VLC playlists were being completely overwritten when I saved over them.

VLC 3.1.1
Android 8.1.0
Samsung Galaxy J7 Perx, Build Number M1AJQ.J727PVPS5BSA3

Strange behaviour of the Recent items list on KitKat:

All of these items are live streams, but they got the covers from the audio files of my phone.
This doesn't happen on Nougat and Oreo.

Sweet and thank you for the notification.

Two things.

1) Somewhat oddly the VLC app page on Google Play notes March 29 as the latest update (although I seem to have the April 9 version.)
2) What is the update schedule? When can one reasonably expect this fix to roll out via Play Store?

I am not sure how you managed to have steams in the history. Did you read them in a playlist?

"Sorting preferences are now saved"

I have waited so long for this! It's going to take me a while to stop automatically resorting my video every time I come into VLC, ha! Great job guys! Using it right now and so far it's nice and smooth.

The new version no longer sees any of the media files on my SD card. Go into Settings | Media library folders and check various boxes - go back out - then back in - and nothing has persisted. Uninstalled/reinstalled, rebooting: neither of these fixes the problem.

LG Aristo running Android 7.0. 128 gb micro-SD card. Auto rescan is on.

When rewinding a video (either a fast 3-second seek or a longer seek), the audio drops out for a couple of seconds. If I'm doing a quick rewind to hear a line of dialouge I missed, this delay in audio defeats the purpose of the rewind.

Also, I might just be a moron, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to use the a-b feature. Any help available?

Thanks!

Oh dear. The equaliser button is missing from the three dots menu. It now shows "Last playlist, Sort by... and Refresh". Where can I get the previous version?

Edit: Found them! They're at https://get.videolan.org/vlc-android/

I have the same problem as menomnon: the new version is unable find any of the video files when I try to enter VLC (Huawei P20 Pro). I have to manually refresh and/or open-close the app over and over again until it finally finds the new videos. Additionally when I close a video the status bar (how much I watched the video) does not refresh automatically, I have to manually refresh until it is updated. -- Deleted the app and installed 3.0.13 and everything works like a charm!

"Sorry - never mind. .nomedia file hijinks. New SD card."
What is the problem, how can I fix it?

Yes, I found it somewhere in the player but I rely on it to change the volume so easy access is vital. The volume rocker on the side of my phone is awkward to use and half the time I press the wrong one so the volume goes down, not up. My songs vary widely in loudness so I change the volume a lot.

OK. So this is not something isolated to my device or the Xperia line alone.

Can you please check in VLC > Menu > History and see if the titles of media played is displayed correctly?

Another small issue

After playing one video almost to the end and then you suddenly open another video (of similar length) at times, the playback of new video starts from the position old video was in. This can result in unexpected spoilers.
