Please help!
I can't get 5.1 surround sound from files on my synology nas through VLC to my fireTV or my Sony TV via HDMI
I've tried all the obvious stuff, switching cables, connecting directly to the amp, directly to the tv etc. etc.
Netflix, amazon prime, iplayer, live tv etc. all play DTS & DD fine.
I've even tried vlc on the sony tv - same issues
I've switched audio streams to surround but just switches to PCM stereo
Mix of file formats with DTS and DD
video & stereo sound plays fine - just no surround.
Synology2013+
Marantz 1508
Sony 49X9000F/XF9005 TV
HELP!

Passthrough is and has been broke on VLC. Doesn’t seem to be any status on when/if it will be fixed.

Yep, I can confirm the problem. Dolby Digital get‘s converted to PCM Bitstream according to the sound input status of my Denon AVR. I tried different source materials from which I know, e. g. my Raspberry Pi with Kodi plays correctly.
The files are stored on AVM Fritzbox AV-Server attached HDD.
This does not apply to Amazon prime streams on same FireTV stick they are played correctly with Dolby Digital+.
So this is most certainly an issue with VLC.
FireOS 5.2.7.1 (current version as of today)
FireTV-Stick second generation (Full-HD-Version)
attached with HDMI to a HDMI 1.3a Denon AVR
VLC 1.3.4
VLC Rev. 71296e9ea VLC: 94bc8e707 (2019-05-02)

This Thread has been opened now almost one year back and been confirmed by multiple users. Is there a chance that it will be fixed? At least a reply that it‘s been acknowledged would be nice.
Thank you!

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I am still having this issue. Please help!
Device: FireTV Stick 4k
Android version: FireOS 6.2.6.8
VLC for Fire version: 3.2.6
Log file: https://pastebin.com/KxuA0iik
Sample File: TestMySurround.dbr.mp4 https://drive.google.com/file/d/1kYMlxXkXti8tRsMcYpymloh38vMn9_SL/view?usp=sharing
Issue details: I have audio passthrough enabled in VLC and sound settings on device set to "Always Dolby Digital". Device is connected to the TV via hdmi, TV audio is set to RAW passthrough with optical connection to receiver. When I play an AC3 3F2M/LFE encoded file in VLC, it is down-sampling the audio to dolby 2.0 channels. I'm not getting any audio from the subwoofer or surround channels.
Other apps on the device play dolby digital 5.1 correctly, including Netflix and even playing the same files using Archos Video v.10.2 using it's passthrough mode 2.
