Does VLC Media Player for Android Play MPEG-2?

Windows VLC lists under features: MPEG-1/2 https://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html

VLC for Android under features Plays all files, in all formats, like the classic VLC. https://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-android.html but does not list MPEG-1/2

If it does play MPEG-2 is there a minimum OS and hardware requirement?

Thanks

Ken

I use VLC to play MPEG-2 all the time. I used Windows Media Center to record TV shows and it produces .wtv files which is essentially wrapped MPEG-2 files. Now I use Plex to record TV and it produces .ts file, which is also just another wrapper for MPEG-2.

Both file format play fine but please note that MPEG-2 is incompatible with hardware decoding. So decoding is done via software which requires a lot of CPU power. If you have a flagship phone even a couple of generations old, you should be fine. By the way, software decoding is not limited to VLC, MX Player and BS Player uses software to decode MPEG-2 as well.

Good Luck!

pypk,

Thanks for the info!!

Will be using a Samsung Note 3 and maybe some older phones.

Do you know ~ how much RAM is needed? Am guessing this is not a problem for the Note 3

Also is there an Android App that can measure the CPU and RAM load for MPEG-2?

Thanks again for your help!
