Subtitles on VLC for Android TV...

Hello,
I have Sony XBR-A1E TV
I can stream movies from the local network Windows 7 share using VLC player app I installed on TV. No issues finding location for the movies.
However, when directing to the location of the subtitles files from the menu while watching the movie, it only gives me an option for the internal TV memory. I also tried to add the location of subtitle files in Settings and not able to add network shared location.
I tried the same think on my Samsung tablet … no issues directing to the location of the subs, but it has to be done for every movie file.
Is there a way to get VLSub to work on VLC app for Android TV?
Thanks

How do you browse and open the video files? If you use ES Explorer, it will not work. However, if you browse the network location directly from the VLC application, you will be able to load the subtitles (if they don't load automatically).

Found a solution...

If your network share is upnp, VLC will only see the TV's local folders to look for subtitle files. If you browse over smb, VLC finds the subtitles in the same folder the video file is in.

I have the same problem with VLC on my Android phone. Is there another solution for UPNP?
SMB is not working (just spins without loading as somebody posted here: https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=144402), and I don't want to fix SMB enabling SMB 1.0 in Windows 10 because it's a high security risk.

Indeed, I don't think this is doable in UPnP, unless the UPnP server gives us the subtitle info.
