DD 5.1 or DTS on android tv?

I have a Sony TV with android and the VLC app and have not been able to get dolby digital or DTS passed through to my receiver with the optical or ARC connections - it only has 2-channel LPCM. Is there any way to enable the audio pass-through? Kodi and Plex work with DD 5.1, and (usually) re-encode DTS as DD. Their forums mention some issues with the android API and DTS - but the 'Movies' app that comes with the TV will pass DTS.
