if Windows password protected sharing is off, VLC app won't use stored credentials

Postby mseiei » 14 May 2017 03:43

trying to set my computer to show some folders to users without login (for movies and music) with my credentials i turned off password protected sharing on the windows machine and set permission to ''anyone'' on the media folders, while keeping my personal folders with my user permissions.

if i turn on password protected sharing, VLC app logs in with my credentials, giving me access to my private shared folders, if i turn off password protected sharing (so others can connect to ''anyone'' folders) the VLC on my phone stops seeing the private folders, other aplications (like my file manager) have no problems with ''anyone'' and private shared folders when switching password protection.

A wild guess is that VLC does not attempt to authenticate if windows is not asking for credentials, when it should attempt to login if it have credentials for that smb before going ''anyone'' mode

summary:
VLC with already stored credentials ignores them if the windows machine is set to not ask for credentials on shared folders.

Can you try 2.1.6?
just tried 2.1.6 and 2.1.7 (last build for each) for armv7 devices (Xperia Z3 running marshmallow)
''problem'' persists
steps:
-turned on password protected sharing on windows 10
-attemp to access folder from fresh install of VLC for android
-enter credentials (it works, folders with ''my user'' permissions are visible)
-turn off password protected sharing on windows
-refresh network tab on VLC for android (restart application shows same behavior)
-> folders that does not have ''everyone'' permission on sharing dissapears

Seems to be correct!?
Either password protected or not!? But not both at the same time?

If I don't understand Windows folder sharing / protection:
May this have to do with VLC credential caching?
