Android - vlc not associated with streaming video

Postby csr » 21 Apr 2016 10:19

For some reason, my vlc on Android (Motorola Moto G 2., Marshmallow) is no longer associated with network streams. I can
  • Play local files
  • Play network streams by pasting a url into the app, but
I cannot play network streams by clicking on a link (in a browser or in BubbleUpnp). The "select a video player" dialogue just doesn't include vlc.

I tried using "Default App Manager" but this just confirms what the dialogue was telling me - vlc is registered to play video, but not video streams.

(Incidentally I have exactly the same problem with MX Player. Also it used to work fine, until a week or so ago. I've been travelling and had background data restriction turned on, but I changed that back when I came home. And anyway, the problem is the same on WiFi and cellular.)

Can you tell me which version of VLC are you using?
Did you get a frimware upgrade recently?
Can you post one of your streams URL?

  • vlc v0.9.10
    No recent firmware upgrade
I'll send you a valid url in a PM.

The url actually plays just fine if I paste it directly into vlc. It's when I click on the play link in BubbleUpnp that vlc is not offered as a possible player. So it's possible/probable the problem is with Android or BubbleUpnp.

You are using the old deprecated app.

You should switch to: https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... deolan.vlc

And even register to the beta here: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/org.videolan.vlc

Ok, I naively assumed the beta-app was the newer version. Upgrading doesn't help with my problem, but I'm now 99% certain that it's an Android (Marshmallow) issue.
