VLC never stops downloading on RCA 4.4 Android tablet

Hi All- 1st post here! 
I recently got my first tablet- a 7" RCA running Kitkat 4.4, mostly because it came with a keyboard and was absurdly cheap.
It works fine, but I'm still on the learning curve for Android; but when I found VLC available in the Google App store, I started to download it.
(I have had VLC on my laptop and it is incredibly useful, and never given a problem.)
Well, in the Apps panel, there's a running line and it says 'Downloading'.
Thing is, VLC has been 'downloading for 2 weeks and never finishes, never appears in the list of apps.
Other updates have come and done; I tried leaving it plugged in and set to stay on overnight, that didn't work.
VLC never appears in the Apps panel or the pulldown updates notifier, so I think for some reason it never finishes downloading.
Does anyone have an RCA and have successfully downloaded VLC? Or a good idea on how to proceed? Thanks!
