Many users are still using an old beta

Postby rugk » 19 Jul 2015 15:11

I've also only discovered this a few days ago. The problem is that there are two versions of VLC on Google Play. Here are them with the actual amount of users:
[*] VLC for Android beta 0.9 (?) 50,000,000–100,000,000
[*] VLC for Android 1.4.1 5,000,000–10,000,000

So as you can see many users still use the old Beta version. I think the problem is that if you use the old Beta version there was no announcement or update which directed you to download the new app.
E.g. it would be an idea to push an update to the old Beta version which adds a information in the app that you may download the new version. (Or at least push an update with the same built, but this information in the release notes of Google Play)

Ha ha. This happened to me. I have been using 0.9 Beta since Dec 2014. Yesterday I saw an announcement of 1.5.0 on the Beta testers Google+. I got wondering where the *ell are 1.0-1.4? Went into Google Play and there is 1.4.1.

Now I have 1.4.1 and waiting for 1.5.0.

@sling-shot
Yes that's exactly the problem. I had it too.
I was always using 0.9 Beta and a bit I wondered why there are no updates. So a few days ago I looked at the VLC website where it is states that v 1.4 is the newest.

That correct. The reason is that there are still 2 major regressions on the new one.

Do you mean compared to the 0.9 Beta? Or 1.4.1 vs. 1.5?

So users are switching from the new 1.4.1 version to the 0.9 Beta? Really?
I have no idea why they would do so.

Yes, because of performance regressions.
