I have a Samsung Galaxy S3. VLC seems to work good for me with music files, I haven't tried yet playing videos. I have some mp3 files that built in android player and some other players, even paid ones refuses to play, but VLC plays them just fine.
However I have many mid and mod/it/s3m files . VLC lists them, but doesn't play them. Can VLC be made to support them ?

I think MIDI files require a soundfont (.sf2) to be able to play (see http://wiki.videolan.org/MIDI ). IIRC this is not implemented in the Android port yet.

Midi files can be played using soundfount or using Android API, as in windows they can be played using windows api. This is what all other Android players do.
Mod files doesn't need all that.
I hope it will be implemented soon as for now I don't have one player that can play all of my files.
