Can it be made to install to SD card?

Currently VLC installs on internal memory and cannot be moved to SD card. This takes up 20+ MBs of internal memory. The vast majority of new Android handsets being sold around here in my country have low internal memory.

For eg. the most recommended budget Android is HTC Explorer which has only 90 MB of internal memory. A Sony Ericsson Live With Walkman which I have bought recently has about 320 MB of which a major chunk has been eaten up by software updates and I am perennially running low on memory even after moving all possible applications to SD card.

Please consider allowing VLC installation into SD card.

We are working on it; please subscribe yourself to http://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/7066 and you will be notified when (if ever) it is fixed. Thank you for your interest in VLC for Android.

Just installed the 2nd beta and I see VLC can now be installed on SD card ... but how?
Do I need a tool to move it or does this feature only work with a fresh install?
(Sorry, Android newbie)

Settings → Apps → VLC → "Move to SD card"

Note: Some newer phones (e.g. Galaxy Nexus) have a shared SD and internal space (they are one partition) so naturally you don't have to move it, it is "already on" it.

I don't have the 'move' option in 4.0.3 on my Archos tablet ... is that a feature in newer Android versions?

Move to SD has been present since Android 2.2. Maybe you have a really modern device that has a combined SD and internal partition, so SD card space is the same as the internal space.

my Archos G9 80 calls it's internal memory SDcard (/sdcard), but I've also got an external micro SD slot (/mnt/sdcard) that I use for storing audio and video files. I was hoping to also use that for installing apps ...

Since Jelly Bean, I hear that it is no longer possible to move applications to SD card. Is it true regarding VLC too?
I do not yet have a Jelly Bean phone.

To my knowledge the 'move-to-SD' feature hasn't been removed from Android.

* However the feature is redundant (and hence doesn't exist) on devices like the Galaxy Nexus because the system and 'sd' memory are combined.

The problem is mostly with the newer devices that have limited internal storage compared to the requirements of today.
For eg. I am eyeing Sony Xperia ZR but it claims 8 GB internal memory although only around 4 GB is available to the user. Add to it any updates to the factory installed apps and another chunk is gone.
So internal memory becomes very scarce.
There are many reports on the internet that in Android beyong ICS, the option to move applications to SD card is not present. Even when an SD slot present. The microSD is supposed to be used only for movie/song/files.

At least in vanilla/AOSP it should be there.

It is also possible that your manufacturer has disabled it on their ROMs.
