VLC Firestick No media files found

I am a novice. I want to play video files stored on my PC. I loaded VLC 3.5.4 on my Firestick 4K. Browsing - Local Network - it finds my Windows 11 PC "smb" protocol. When I select the Windows PC, VLC says "No Media Files Found". On the Windows PC, I verified the folder containing the media files is "Shared" and SMB-1 protocol is enabled. On the Windows PC, I tried sharing the folder with myself and also with Everybody (same result). I turned-off the Windows firewall (public and private) (same result).

Can you go to the app's settings > Advanced and try unchecking "Prefere SMB 1"?

I tried it both ways (SMB-1 checked and unchecked), no difference.

Could you please share some logs? Reproduce the issue and then go to: Settings > Advanced > Debug logs. Then share the logs with the sharing service you prefer (Google Drive, Dropbox, pastebin...).

Bob12468, sorry to divert this conversation a bit, but I got a new Firestick 4K Max and I want to load VLC for Android onto it. How did you do it? I previously had managed to load 3.5.4 onto another Firestick 4K a couple of years ago, but now can only find a site for loading 3.3.4 (Firestick Tricks), which I did and it works but it's not quite as good as my other Firestick with 3.5.4. I did find a couple of other sites, but I'm not sure that I can trust them. The best one seems to be APKMirror, but there's another one that might be impersonating an official VideoLan site.

The last one might not even be the proper version. Googling around, it seems like I need the 'armeabi-V7a' version.

And finally, do I have to delete the previous 3.3.4 version or can I install the 3.5.4 over it? Thanks for any help.

I loaded 3.5.4 from the Amazon Firestick app store (default location for firestick apps). But since I can't seem to get 3.5.4 to work, maybe you're better-off? Since firestick is so easy to delete apps, suggest you delete the old and do a fresh load. If you get 3.5.4 to work, let me know (one more data point to help isolate my problem). Where did you obtain 3.3.4?

How did you find it in the app store? The only one I saw was VLC for Fire, which is not the same thing and doesn't work as well. I couldn't get it to find my NAS. Here's the website I used: https://www.firesticktricks.com/vlc-on-firestick.html

Don't overthink it. On your firestick go to Home, Apps (usually next to Settings), App Library, Get-More-Apps. Then search for VLC. If yours downloads an older version, perhaps your Firestick is not compatible with the newer version?

Unfortunately nobody has been able to help with my original complaint (the subject of this thread).

I have VLC for Fire TV on my Amazon Fire TV Cube but have not used it for some months. It used to work (except see below), but I just tried it and it does not work now. Same message as you get. Yet Kodi on it works fine for home content. In my case, there have been no config changes and as Kodi works there is no problem with Windows sharing. So it appears Amazon has broken something.

I previously tried sideloading the standard VLC but could not get it to work. Not sure what the problem was now.

I will see if I can solve it not working in the next couple of days. Are you aware that VLC for Fire TV downmixes multichannel home content to 2 channels? This is why I don't use it anymore. I assume they configured it that way so we will be more likely to pay for their streaming content.
