Volume control for video wraps around on Fire tablet

Postby bungled » 18 Oct 2023 11:28

Hello,

I have done a search both here and elsewhere, and other than one reference to the problem on Reddit from five years ago (which seemed to be resolved by moving to a different player) I can find no-one else with this issue.

Using the latest version of VLC from the Amazon app store, when playing video the volume wraps around. The tablet itself is the Kids version but it does it both in the restricted childrens profile and in the adult profile. I don't get the same behaviour when playing audio, just video. 100% is halfway up the volume scroller, when it gets to 100% if you press volume up again it goes back to 0%. I can cope with this but it is driving my five year old (and as a consequence my wife) up the wall....

I have tried clearing preferences/cache but no change. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

In the video player, can you try to open the advanced settings (3 horizontal dots at the bottom) > Control settings > disable Audio boost.

OK done that, now 100% is at the top of the slider, but the wrap around issue is still there, it just wraps around from the top of the bar at 100% instead of in the middle.

This is nothing new, nor device specific!

This infuriating behavior has been plaguing the Android version on every device I've owned for at least the last 5 years...
I can't believe there aren't more complaints about this!

This has got to be one of the more frustrating behaviors of any media player I've used. It is so annoying!

And I genuinely can not even imagine a scenario in which this behavior would be desirable, advantageous or intuitive.

It doesn't even give you a courtesy pause & hold when you reach either extreme before jumping to the opposite extreme.

And there is no setting I can find to alter this behavior.

I have long assumed that this was an intentional, albeit terrible, feature.
There are tons of annoying aspects of the Android version; whether missing settings or bizarre behaviors.
Computers:
ASUS Sabertooth X58 Core i7 930 (ALC892 onboard audio), 24GB DDR3, Sapphire Radeon HD 6870; Gigabyte X58A-UD3R (ALC898) Core i7 920, 18GB DDR3, XFX Radeon HD 5770; MacPro5,1 8GB RAM; Toshiba Satellite L640
OSes:
Mac OS X 10.8.5; Windows 7 Ultimate (x64)
