VLC Android "No media files found"

Postby HRL » 22 Jul 2023 15:31

Windows 11 with Windows Media Server running
Smart TV with Android 8
on Smart TV: VLC Player + standard media player app
===
Standard media player works, able to browse folders and play media = OK
VLC Player -> Browse Local Netwerk -> error "No media files found"
===
Doesn't work from my Samsung phone either.
Have the impression VLC is trying with SMB, should be DLNA/UPnP
===
Don't know what to do ???

Let me clarify my problem, including the latest developments:

Situation
I have a Windows 10 laptop with Windows Media Streaming Service running.

I have a Samsung Phone with VLC Player 3.5.4. Streaming from the laptop to my phone and playing video files (mkv) using VLC Player and UPnP is working perfectly. :!:.
Browsing the local network with VLC first comes up with an SMB icon (which doesn't work for me), but after a few minutes it also shows the UPnP icon (which does work for me). If I click the SMB icon by accident, I get a "no media files" message and am lost, because nothing will work anymore. But I can live with that.

I have a Philips "smart" TV with Android 8 and VLC Player version 3.5.4. (i.e. same version as on my phone). I can't get this to work. It only comes up with the SMB icon (which does not work), but never shows the UPnP icon (which is what I need).

My "smart" tv also has a standard (Android?) media player. This player works well. But I am not happy with this player, because it does not support chapters in mkv-files. So I prefer to use the VLC Player.

Question
What should I do, so the UPnP icon will come up in VLC Player on my "smart" tv?

Topic can be closed, suspect my “smart” tv does not support UPnP.

I now have SMB shares working, which is better than UPnP for security reasons anyway.

The problem with SMB shares was caused by the NTFS permissions on the Windows laptop.

I also found out (with Wireshark network analyzer) that SMB streaming does not require Windows Media Server (WMS) running.

A network trace only contains SMB (on TCP) network traffic, no RTSP (on UDP) that is used by WMS.

So I have shut down the Windows streaming service and everything still works fine.
