VLC constantly crashes on Chromecast

I was playing music files stored on an USB drive connected to Chromecast with Google TV, and experienced constant VLC crashes. VLC would shut down Chromecast completely about every 10 mins or so. Upon restarting Chromecast and VLC, the same would happen again. This would NOT happen when I was using any other app on the Chromecast, like streaming from Youtube TV. I also know there was no issue with the USB drive, because it worked perfectly fine when connected to my computer. So the problem is unique to VLC.

Is this a known issue with VLC? Are there ways to fix it in settings?
