Songs from the same album shown as 2 differents album

Hello

Just saw a weird thing with audio library.
Some album ( compilations ) are shown as 2 albums.
Already check tags from these files but does not found the issue here...

Tags seem to be different:
On the left: Le Roi Soleil - Artistes Divers
On the right: Le Roi Soleil - Christophe Maé

If you look at screenshot 2 and 3, you will see each track has different artist

With your idea, it should show more than 2 albums.

I do not find why the last song is not shown in the same album that the 4 others...

All other players I've tried are working fine with this specific case, even old devices with old ROMs from 2013-2014:

There is something fundamentally wrong in the sorting algorithm used by VLC that they don't want to change.

Yes there IS something wrong. If I go to artiste view and choose Christophe Maé, both album are there ( even the one with artiste divers ! )



And as you can see on the previous screenshot, it shows 6 album.

But if you return to artist list, it says only 5 album for this artist...



But if this issue is ignored for years, maybe it is useless to fight and I will just return to foobar for music playback...

Could you share the faulty samples? There are many things that could explain the behavior but it's just speculative without the actual files & tags

Oh and since the classification might depend on the file hierarchy, could you tell us how your files are stored? Are all the tracks in the same folders?

Here is how my folders are organized :
- one general music folder
- one folder by artist in the general folder
- one folder by album in each artist folder

The issue is essentialy with compilation or album from musical show.

The album I use as exemple have tracks from 3 different artists. I could understand if vlc see only one album or see 3 albums as there is 3 artists but I don't understand why it sees 2 albums...

Will share tracks if you need them...

Having the tracks would definitely help (if you'd prefer you can upload them somewhere and send me a link through email to chouquette at videolan.org)

If not the tracks, at least a dump of their ID3 tags

If all the tracks for the same album are in the same folder, most likely they are tagged with inconsistent artists

5 tracks are in the same folder.

-2 with emmanuel moire as artist
-2 with christophe maé as artist
-1 with la troupe du roi soleil as artist

Even with that in mind it should show 3 albums and not only 2.

The issue is that all tracks are tagged with an Album Artist identical to the Artist tag. For compilations we support these cases:
- No Album Artist (in which case we do what we can to figure out that it's actually a compilation and not multiple albums from multiple artists)
- A correct album artist is provided and is identical in all tracks, in which case we ignore the Artist tag when it comes to assigning the track to an album

For other cases, in short it depends if the album is tagged as a multi disc album or not, which is most likely why "Tant qu'on rêve encore" is added to one of the album and "Et vice versaille" is rejected. The end behavior seems strange indeed, and I agree that intuitively there should be 3 albums. However I'm pretty sure that if you retag your album with a Various Artist that matches the compilation itself, rather than all individual artists, the album will be detected as it should

I'll take a look with other people to see if we can do something about this, but I doubt we will try to support incorrect album artists tags

Agree with you that if I want all the tracks displayed as one album, I will have to change tags.

So with the file I share, it should show 3 albums ( what I would consider as normal ) and not only 2.

As you can see foobar show 3 album with the same files : one for tracks from christophe maé, one for tracks from emmanuel moire and one for tracks from la troupe du roi soleil.



If vlc could do the same thing, it would be absolutly good for me...

Partially, it uses the Artist, AlbumArtist, Number of CDs, release date and album title.
Then it's mostly a matter of which file gets analyzed first, I think the track that should be part of the "3rd album" is considered to be a match for the 1st one because it's tagged as a multi disc so we assume it to be part of a multi disc compilation (which AFAICS would be a bug)
