Numbers replacing actual file names

Postby mironmizrahi » 13 Mar 2021 04:26

Hi

I have installed VLC on my Google Chromecast. I am accessing using UPNP my NAS (which has a DLNA server) and everything is working fine except that once a file is played, if I stop play and come back to it later, file name is displayed using a number instead of the actual file name, which makes it difficult to pick the right file to resume.
So for example if I have a file called 'XXX.mp4' and I have not yet played it, I can see it in the file list as is. If I stop playing and come back to it a day later (let's say) it shows it as 12345.mp4.

Any ideas how this behaviour can be disabled?

Thanks

I expect this is the problem: https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=156326
And is a known issue tracked here: https://code.videolan.org/videolan/vlc- ... ssues/1434

No ETA for fix which is surprising as it is a showstopper given that one-by-one, once played file names change to a string of text/numbers. For the time being I've moved on to Nova Video Player (app install on TV).

Thanks EasterEEL. Oddly the issue log states that "The problem has been solved perfectly for video files, but it still exists for audio files.". Does not seem to be the case. Thanks for the tip. Will try Nova.

VLC on Firestick 4k filenames changing to numbers after playback

Postby DvX77 » 12 Apr 2021 18:01

VLC 3.3.4 running on Firestick 4K.

I have video files on a drive plugged into my router that I access through uPnP.

For an example, let’s say I have a video series, that is in a folder with the series’ name, and within that, there is a folder for each season. Episodes are named: “Series.name.SxxExx.Episode.title.mkv”

When I first open VLC (after install or after clearing data on firestick) the files all appear within the directory structure organized by those file names.

The problem is, after playback, the particular file appears at the beginning of the list (still within the season folder) as an arbitrary number. For example in The Office season 2 folder, everything is listed under the letter T. However after playback, S02E12 (as an example) appears above the list under a “#” as “76.mkv”. I played S02E11 amd it appeared as “75.mkv” and S02E13 appeared as “77.mkv”

The only way to go back to the file names is to force quit and clear data/cache in the firestick settings, which, I suppose, forces it to reindex the files.

Is there anything I can do to fix this?
Thanks!

Hi,

I am running VLC 3.4.0 beta 5 on android. I had the same problem.

On beta 3, it seem fixed (the source file name appeared both on directory listings, the history, and the file name being played).
On beta 4, it started using the same file name (a real one) for several files but it presented a proper name.
On beta 5, it is back to 3.3.4 behaviour except that files opened with previous betas retain the actual name in history but new ones are back to number.ext naming on all sections.

Do I need to provide extra information?

Beta 6 have been release in the last few hours. It should have fixed the issue again (sorry for the inconvenience).

Thanks for reply, Aza.

Unfortunately, beta 6 hasn't resolved the issues. I've had to revert to beta3.

Scenario:
- VLC running on MX10 (Android 10)
- miniDLNA server

Feel free to request any additional info you need.

Greetings,

Just making a note that I've this problem too. I'm running the release version of 3.4.0 on Android. When I initially browse the share, I see the file system file names. On later visits, they are replaced by <numbers>.mp3. This happens even after restarting the app and coming back much later.

My server is a DNLA/UPNP Synology box. I notice this happens with both MP3 files and MP4 files.

I haven't seen it happen on the desktop version of VLC. It correctly presents the metadata each session.

Regards,
R.T.G.

I've installed VLC 3.4.2 on my Android device. I'm delighted to see that the filename/ID tag name has been fixed!

Just wanted to update this thread with my thanks to the team.

Best regards,
RTG.
