Music playlist issues

I recently dumped my casual listening music collection the microSD card in my phone as a generic play list. Here are my two biggest current issues I've encountered. Almost all are mp3s with varial bitrate up to 320.

* Playlist will regularly crash out halfway though a song and start again at the first file in the list

* Even though I set the playlist to play randomly and then resave the playlist, the next day (or if it crashes out) it reverts to play in order

Is there a number of files that beyond which VLC struggles? Or a combined data size?
The collection is 2.4k tracks consuming 14gb

It should work fine aven with long playlists. Could you share some logs? Reproduce the crash and then go to: Settings > Advanced > Debug logs. Then share the logs with the sharing service you prefer (Google Drive, Dropbox, pastebin...).
The shuffle setting is indeed not kept. You should use the "resume last playback" feature in the audio tab to keep this setting.
