VLC lags on Android TV

Postby leopseft » 29 Mar 2020 18:31

Hello to the forums this is going to be my first post!!

Device: Sony Android TV KD-49XF7596
Android Version: 8.0.0
Linux Kernel Version: 3.10.79
VLC Version: 3.2.10

The problem appears to the combination of 1080p .mkv with codec H254 and .srt files (and maybe with another too but this is one of the problematic combinations).
In every new subtitle "frame" the video lags. It is also obvious that something goes wrong with the subtitles because outside the black outline there is a "distorted" white outline.
The problem doesn't appear if I don't use subtitles and also there is no problem with another player.
The problem appears with enabled or disabled hardware acceleration. I have also played around with different cached values for the with no luck.

Any ideas?

To display subtitles, VLC has to transcode every key frames (for example when the background changes) the video to embed the text lines, while also decoding the video itself. Sony's SOC are reputedly too weak to perform this flawlessly. Disabling or force-closing useless background apps (Google Music, Browser, bloatware...) may reduce significantly the load on the SOC.

Sounds logic but if it was a hardware problem why other players have no issue?

I am using it on my android TV but also on my mobile phone having the same issues. I am watching the news and others and VLC stuffer when using subtitles. No, not subtitle files. A plugin like closed captioning when I enable it and it is stutter when I watch the news and any show on android tv BUT if I turn it off and video play is smoothly.

This seems to be a VLC issue, not a Sony/Bravia one since it was same issue as last year. It doesn't seem to be fix so far.

The subtitle stutter is present on other Android devices as well.

I need closed captioning to be on because I am hearing impaired. Please do something. Thanks.
