Samba or FTP support in VLC for Android TV 8.0

Postby trejder » 10 Jan 2019 21:09

Does the VLC version for the Android TV support network protocols than DNLA?

I am looking for a player able to play (on my Android TV 8.0) movies from my NAS, available via Samba (or FTP alternatively). When I browse info pages (https://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-android.html), I can clearly see "Support for NAS and shared drives browsing" sentence, but does it cover Android TV version?

I am asking, because in version that is currently installed on my device I can see only "local storage" and DNLA. I don't know, if and how can I access files through SMB or FTP?

Thank you.

Yes, it supports UPnP (DLNA), SMB, FTP and other protocols...

Thank you.

Can you clarify, how can I access them? Because either I am blind or I don't see corresponding menu options.

By support I meant an ability to browse video files via FTP, SMB etc. protocols. Currently there's no such feature in my edition of VLC for Android TV.

Currently, when browsing content (third option in main menu) I can see three items:

  • local storage,
  • local network and
  • provide MRL address.
And here is the review:
  1. First option is out discussion and not in the topic of this thread.
  2. Second option only discovers uPNP devices in my local network, but fails completely on most of the SMB devices (can discover only single computer, but no NAS, players, TVs etc.). Could this because VLC only supports one version of SMB (i.e. either SMBv1 or SMBv2) and all my devices supports "the other one"?
  3. I can provide FTP URL in this option, but I must provide direct URL to given media file, and I must provide it each and every time again and again.
By support I meant that I will be able to add SMB or FTP source permanently, it will appear next to those three mentioned above and will allow me full control of that source, including browsing, selecting files, auto-loading subtitles etc. Just like for Local Storage and just like in VLC for PC.

Any chances we get such support?
