Add Last.fm support

Postby saintgerasim » 24 Jul 2014 02:21

VLC player for Android is probably the greatest player on play market, but it doesn't have Last.fm support.
How did you miss such important feature for listeners?
Please fix it and you will earn happiness.
or tell me how to setup scrobbling on my Android device for vlc please.

Not supported yet.

But file a feature request on the ticket tracker.

I too would like this feature :).

As it appears a ticket has not yet been opened, I have opened one here:

Cheers, Arite.

Sorry for bumping this old thread, but after reading the available descriptions of the new Android version I could not find a hint to internal Last.fm scrobbling in the VLC Android app. I was pleased to see that it works again in the desktop version 3.0.3 as well as in the MS Store app and would like to know if this is also the case on Android devices. This rather new thread suggests that it does:

Maybe you could add this info in your official descriptions as well, as scrobbling to Last.fm is still an often used feature by music lovers.

I don't think this is supported on Android.

Hi Jean-Baptiste, thanks for your reply. I just installed the new Android version on my Samsung Galaxy S II, and you are correct, there is no internal setting for scrobbling like in the Windows 10 app. But it seems that the official Last.fm Android app is able to scrobble what VLC plays, so that might explain why the user in the quoted thread thought that VLC Android could scrobble. By the way, if you enable it in the settings, the Last.fm app also caches offline scrobbles and submits them when you have a WLAN connection to the internet again.

I also added this info to a related Trac ticket:

So, do we really need this?

In my opinion it is not necessary if scrobbling local audio files from an Android device with VLC can also be provided by the official Last.fm Android app and probably other external Android scrobbler apps as well. Maybe there are other ways of using VLC where scrobbling would be desirable (local video files, streaming radio stations), but I don't know if an internal scrobbling is necessary then. Also some users don't like the official Last.fm Android app, because it hasn't been updated recently, but that would be a rather weak reason for implementation.

Yesterday I read a related thread on Reddit where someone asked if the iOS version of VLC would scrobble though which it probably doesn't. The official Last.fm iOS app cannot support scrobbling VLC or any other iOS player app, because iOS does not allow this, as far as I know. So implementing it there would make some sense.
