VLC won't play most of my movie formats on my android device

This is probably more of an Android question/problem than a VLC question/problem. I can't get VLC to play my AVI or MPG files. It will play MP4 files in one directory, but not another. I keep getting the message " Playback error - VLC encountered an error with this media - Please try refreshing the media library" I tried that, but that didn't seem to help. Any suggestions? Thanks

Can you access them from a file manager app like OI File Manager?
