Icon in notification bar

Is it possible to have a persistent icon in the notification bar? This way I can quickly switch to VLC from another app.

Then it must be a bug. If I pause what I am listening to and switch to another app, I can't just go to the notification bar to pick up where I left off because the icon in the notification bar is gone. But if the music is currently playing, then the notification will be there.

the notification is not meant for shortcuts ...
