I have samsung galaxy s2 and with time-stretching audio enabled, there is still a higher pitch.

I also have DicePlayer which can play video at a higher speed without altering pitch on the same phone.

So does that mean VLC require a much higher processing power?

Ok so tested on my LG Optimus G:

I selected hardware accelerated decoding and time stretching audio before trying to playback any files.

Playback of some videos is fine unless I try skip forward/backward/etc with The matrix video and flcl video I was able to move around in the video and it would pause the audio momentarily but continue video playback. Baldr on first run had no response and crashed the app. On second run it worked fine until I tried to skip forward which caused the app to crash. The VLC video had sound in portrait mode but no video, where in landscape mode it just crashed.

Tree video 320p25_1500 played fine with some video artifacts on the yellow house.
480p25_2000 stuttered a tiny bit but looked just fine and played fine after stutters. On second play no stutter.
576 stuttered a bit on first play, but no issues on second play.
720 played just fine.

While trying to play video taken with my phone's camera it crashed once with the wheel for fast forward or rewinding. But if I disable that they play just fine normally. If I skip forward using the seekbar: 1. In landscape mode it pauses for a second and resumes. 2. In portrait mode it causes flickering black boxes on top of the video either fully or partially hiding the video for brief moments. After a few seconds the flickering boxes stop or continue randomly.

Playing audio files I had already placed on my phone in mostly .mp3 format was just fine. With both previously on phone audio and video files playback speed changes works fine.

Can you share some logs with regards to the crashes? See http://wiki.videolan.org/Android_Report_bugs for a tutorial on how to do that.

I'll see what I can do. I couldn't find any logcat files so I'm going to try and use android terminal emulator. What would happen is the items would not play or stop responding, so I would hit back and it would start to go to the previous screen, dim a little but I could still see the interface a bit. Wouldn't respond or anything so I would use my phone's task manager to stop it, reopen vlc, and then I get a popup that says vlc is not responding would I like to close it.

I had to go through this process anytime it froze playing a video, or didn't play a video in the first place. Would this situation create logcat files?

It would not create a crash dump, but with adb logcat or aLogCat it would leave behind an usable trace.

Android terminal emulator was giving me access denied to /dev/log/main

So what should I do with alogcat, it's running and showing a stream of text, should I recreate the video problem with alogcat running? (I'm new to using stuff like this sorry)

if I play a movie at 1.5x speed, and I press home key and quit and then go back to VLC, it will show up as 1.5x on the screen but actual speed is back to 1x.

Hello,

I'd like to install VLC on my phone but it doesn't let me download it from Google Play. It says it is not compatible with my device, but I'm not sure whether that's just because you haven't tried it yet.

If I could install a file directly I would try it and let you know if it works. I've got an Utano T180 (Model: HW-T18) with Android 2.3.5. Do you have any version that I could try?

Based on your logcat info, you processor supports ARMv6 with FPU. Therefore you can take the latest build by date from here: http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/armv6-android-fpu/

whats the recommended version of VLC for me and could you provide a link straight to it.

so i dont get lost with a list of a single version and pick the wrong one with bugs that have already bin dealt with.

Yeah, same problem here. I was like "MAN, my smartphone is not the most powerful, but cmon, it's a 2012 smartphone, how can't it be powerful enough".

And then I closed it and POOM, worked.

I have a very importante feature request. I really really need 2 features:
1. A-B option to loop a section of a song
2. Pitch modifier, cuz I'm musician and I use a lot these 2 features in the PC version.

It'd be nice to have these 2 features in my smartphone so I can practice on-the-go. Thank you for this great player!

Found the file and test files.

Ran test using: "Android Armv7-A" - "VLC-debug-20130305-0110"

The form was a bit generic, so I thought I would get you the specifics here. (Filled out form as well.)

First I played test file on PC then on my device, then continued to the next file. Here are my results.

Music: Mr_Zebra.mp3 - Plays, but when skipping it distorts for a few seconds and then continues. Recital_24bit.flac - Does not play, Causes a crash and auto restart of app. Cadence to Arms.ogg - Plays, but when skipping it distorts until you pause and play again then its fine playing again. Video: BALDER.mkv - Plays, Audio takes about 1 sec to kick in and if fast forwarding audio again takes about 1 sec to kick back in. CONT-4G.mkv - Plays, Audio takes about 1 sec to kick in and if fast forwarding audio again takes about 2-3 sec to kick back in. flcl.mkv - Plays, if fast forwarding audio distorts for about 2-3 sec to kick back in. HTC_makes_it_mine.wmv - Plays with audio and fast forwarding works. Mr_MrsSmith-h264_aac.mp4 - Video Plays, audio off with video about 1 sec behind. fast forwarding distorts the audio, pause and plays fixes audio. vlc-player.mp4 - NO Video, audio plays, fast forwarding audio again takes about 1 sec to kick back in. in_to_tree_320p25_1500.mp4 - Plays smooth in_to_tree_480p25_2000.mp4 - Plays Smooth, green bar on left side and small green circle in lower right in_to_tree_576p25_2000.mp4 - Plays smooth in_to_tree_720p25_3000.mp4 - Plays smooth lost_noSoud.mkv - Plays smooth

I've marked the option that allows you to change the speed wothout chagne the pitch. I have an Xperia Neo V, so its a powerful phone, runnin Android 4.0.4. Well, when I reduce the speed, the playback becomes really insupportable and VLC starts to skipping seconds constantly. So it's imposible to listen to a backing track and play along with it if VLC skips seconds and change the tempo.

Thank you, but I think Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo V is a POWERFUL phone, with a CPU 1GHz Scorpion, 512Mb RAM, runnin ICS 4.0.4 and GPU Adreno 205. I can't believe that is not powerful enough for runnin that feature .

Well, time-stretching audio works well on most popular phones like the Samsung Galaxy S3, Nexus 7, Nexus 4, Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S2, and Galaxy Note. So I think it's not an issue of VLC, but something capping your hardware (especially SetCPU).
