Minimising video playback

Is it possible to make it so that you can play videos in the background. I have numerous video podcasts that I have which sometimes I just want to listen to rather than watch. But if I try to play it in the background, it will stop playback. In VLC for Windows, you can do this just by minimising the player. Would you be able to incorporate this feature?
