Sony Xperia S and bugs.

Postby pr1xsel » 09 Jul 2012 11:52

Sometimes when I play videos using VLC on Sony Xperia S then it freezes during seek or doesn't start playing next video.
1. Is normal bug reporting that's built into Android any good or do we need to copy crash logs, hang logs and send them manually?
2. How I debugg freezes using Nightly builds?

My phones processor is : ARMv7 rev 4 (v7l) Features : swp half thumb fastmult vfp edsp neon vfpv3.
3. So I assume I should try using Nightly builds using android-v7-neon?

4. Will Beta version be updated and when will Hardware acceleration be set as default?
5. And does using CPU consume more resources and energy than GPU?
6. Is VLC optimized for multiple cores or it's using one thread?

Tried it just now, creating thumbnails freezes VLC and when I can first media file fine until I seek or go back to media library then it freezes again.
6th question is that why is there lock button if it doesn't work. I assume it should Lock the UI from disappearing or lock so that sliding on the screen wouldn't seek or change volume?

7th problem is that when I play music and then also start playing something on VLC then both are played at the same time. This is not good, people can't hear when someone calls on Skype or when notification happens or when someone calls them. This should be using native back-end api or something?

Let's see, I'll try to answer these to the best of my ability...
1. Is normal bug reporting that's built into Android any good or do we need to copy crash logs, hang logs and send them manually?
If you use the (slightly outdated) build that on Google Play right now, the it will automatically send crash reports. But if you are using the nightlies.videolan.org version, you should definitely use logcat and get the crash logs. Even with the market build, getting the messages would be nice.

Instructions can be found here: http://wiki.videolan.org/Android_Report_bugs#Logcat_log
2. How I debug freezes using Nightly builds?
See above answer.
My phone's processor is : ARMv7 rev 4 (v7l) Features : swp half thumb fastmult vfp edsp neon vfpv3.
3. So I assume I should try using Nightly builds using android-v7-neon?
Yes.
4. Will Beta version be updated and when will Hardware acceleration be set as default?
Yes, the Beta version on Google Play is going to get an update to 0.0.2, which fixes many bugs and improves much support from 0.0.1

As for the other question, when it is more thoroughly tested and stable I guess. (Basically when it's ready.)
5. And does using CPU consume more resources and energy than GPU?
I don't know, but I might guess that it would depend on various factors.
6. Is VLC optimized for multiple cores or it's using one thread?
As far as I can tell, yes, VLC is able to use multiple cores for decoding.

Code: Select all

D/VLC (31029): [0xc6ec58]: avcodec decoder allowing 3 thread(s) for decoding D/VLC (31029): [0xc6ec58]: avcodec decoder ffmpeg codec (H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10)) started D/VLC (31029): [0xc6ec58]: avcodec decoder using frame thread mode with 3 threads
The lock icon is for locking the screen orientation when viewing videos.
7th problem is that when I play music and then also start playing something on VLC then both are played at the same time. This is not good, people can't hear when someone calls on Skype or when notification happens or when someone calls them. This should be using native back-end api or something?
Pausing on incoming call is fixed in the latest builds at nightlies.videolan.org. This was a known bug in the Market version.
