VLC Android keeps closing g

Postby rhoneyman » 27 May 2024 15:51

This started today, wasn't an issue yesterday. A54 Android 14 UI 6.1. VLC 3.5.4. I seem to be in the beta program, but I can't see any changes in the past couple of years.

There is indeed no beta running right now. What would help are some logs. If you are tech savvy enough and you are able to use adb logcat, please share them. If not, I fear that you should try to delete VLC's storage data to start over.

Thanks. I'm not particularly Android (or Linux) savvy. I'll give the wipe out a try. If that doesn't work, I'll figure out how to generate logs.

Clearing data didn't work. I cleared logs and then replicated the problem. Here is the log from my phone.

There is no crash in this log. Could you please share the whole log file with the sharing service you prefer (Google Drive, Dropbox, pastebin...).

Hmmm ... yet VLC stopped playing after a short while of playing some flac files. I'm trying it again. I just spent 13 hours driving from Michigan to NY. Sometimes VLC would play for more than an hour. At other times, only about 10 minutes. But the trip didn't show up in the log. I'm guessing that when I close the app, the log gets wiped. When it crashes, the log remains intact. But Just to be sure, I'm guessing that the longer it takes to crash, the larger the log file. I'll upload it to Drive or DB and drop the link here.

BTW, I'm going to settings/advanced/debug logs. Verbose box is checked in the Developer section. I assume that's where I need to go for the log.

It just happened again (playback stopped no crash). No log. I'll have to play around with it to figure out what I'm doing wrong. Oh wait. I think I need to leave the log screen live to do the capture. Got it.

This is from the latest incident. Again, not crashing, just stopping playing in the middle of a file. Thank's for your help.

Unlikely but possible it's hardware failure. My car "speedometer" is an old, warping phone that has gotten several Krazy Glue treatments when the BACK key failed to register. Now it seems to be registering sporadically even when not pressed. Not sure whether heat or vibration is a contributing factor.

Separately, you say you are playing FLAC files. It would be helpful to know if the bug occurs with other encodings such as MP3. Does the bug occur out of the car? Are you listening to music through the phone's speakers or audio jack, or are you depending on other technology such as Android Auto or Bluetooth?

Thanks for the response. My answers:

1. It's a fairly new phone; hardware is not likely to be an issue.
2. When this first started occurring, Android reported the app crashing and being unstable. That no longer happens. But the app continues to stop in the middle of playing files.
3. I have no mp3 files so I can't easily test without finding a couple of hours worth of music to download. I think Amazon may owe me some mp3 files for some CDs I purchased in the past that offer free mp3 downloads. I'll go look.
4. The stopping happens with headphones and in the car, so it's almost certainly nothing to do with Android Auto. Bluetooth? I'd have to find a way to play without Bluetooth. I'll look into it.
5. Actually, in the car, I have to plug into a USB port to get AA to project to the car's screen. That suggests the music is being shunted through the same wire, not Bluetooth, but I'll do more testing.

I'm an idiot.

I only click on folders to play my music. Why bother letting VLC take an hour to index when I don't even want to see a list of artists/tracks/albums/whatever. I use my folder system to choose composer/type of piece/piece.

Turns out, indexing actually matters.

I'm not sure this helped (although it certainly didn't hurt), but I let VLC move itself to my microSD card, where my 560GB of music resides.

Problem solved. Well, the app problem, not the idiot problem.
